FUT Hair Transplantation

The Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is different from the FUE procedure in the way that Dr. Mantse harvests the hair & the hair follicles from the patient’s donor scalp area.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

The FUT hair transplant procedure involves the strip excision method, in which Dr. Mantse makes thin surgical incisions to remove a strip of the scalp with the highest follicular units from the donor area, which are then transplanted to the balding area.  The strip scission hair restoration procedure allows Dr. Mantse to graft larger numbers of follicular units at one time.  Dr. Mantse then proceeds with the hair transplantation in the same meticulous manner as with FUE hair transplant.

THE PROCEDURE FOR FUT HAIR TRANSPLANTATION

The FUT hair transplant technique is performed while the patient is under a local anesthesia.  Dr. Mantse makes very precise incisions, typically in the back of the head, to remove a narrow strip of scalp with the densest follicular units per unit area.  The harvested area of the scalp is then viewed under a microscope & sliced into individual hair follicular units, which Dr. Mantse then meticulously transplants onto the balding areas one by one, just like in the FUE hair transplant procedure.

Unlike Follicular Unit Extraction, Follicular Unit Transplantation does leave a thin scar (1-2 mm) at the donor area, and that is why this method is usually recommended for patients with a long hairstyle. To learn more about the Follicular Unit Extraction method, or follicular unit-based hair transplantation in general, please visit our pages for each topic.

AFTER THE FUT HAIR TRANSPLANTATION PROCEDURE

When the harvest is complete, Dr. Mantse artfully sutures together the donor area.  With this technique Dr. Mantse hides the sutures within the hair follicles, which means the donor strip & the resulting narrow scar are hidden within the hair in the back of the head.   The sutures are removed approximately 7-10 days after the procedure & if the patient chooses to leave Budapest, Hungary immediately after the hair transplant, a local physician can easily perform this step.  When the linear incision is fully healed, there is only a very thin & nearly invisible scar in the back of the head.

Most patients don’t experience acute pain post surgery but some will choose to use over the counter pain medication during the recovery process.  Dr. Mantse recommends that patients do not participate in any strenuous or contact sports during the first 3 weeks of recovery.  Although many patients choose to return to normal work duties just one day after the procedure, some patients feel more comfortable recovering at home during the first 2 weeks after the hair replacement.

Patients can expect the first new hair growth to start within 4 months after the hair transplantation although it takes 8 – 12 months to see the final results.  This long-term restoration means the new hair growth looks completely natural & organic.
