While it's considered part of the natural aging process, we often ignore or simply accept wrinkles and sagging around the delicate eye area. Creams and serums just can't measure up to the dramatic and long lasting effects of cosmetic eyelid surgery.
Blepharoplasty, though commonly performed for aesthetic purposes, is also performed for correcting a medical condition known as drooping or heavy eyelid (ptosis) which can block vision. Ptosis is often caused by nerve damage or insufficient muscle tone.
Blepharoplasty is also the perfect solution for correcting puffy eyes and is often performed in connection with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as:
- forehead lift and brow lift
- crows feet correction
- facial sagging
The benefits of cosmetic eyelid surgery
Cosmetic eyelid surgery is a popular procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelid region, eliminating drooping eyes and sinking upper eyelids. Eyelid surgery transforms puffy and baggy eyelids from a tired and worn out look to that of a younger, fresher and more positive looking appearance.
As with other forms of cosmetic surgery, successful blepharoplasty can give you more confidence and self-esteem, which is one of the main ingredients for a happy social-life and successful career. It may be difficult to believe but having this minor surgical procedure can make a tremendous impact on one's outlook on life and affect future success.

The blepharoplasty procedure
Using local anaesthesia and state of the art technology, the blepharoplasty procedure can be performed as an outpatient procedure. Prior to making a slight incision, the surgeon marks the exact incision lines for the eyelid surgery. The excess fat is then removed and the incisions are sealed using very fine sutures. Approximately 5 days after the operation the sutures are removed.
After cosmetic eyelid surgery
Your surgeon will inform you with regards to all post operative care following your procedure. Immediately following the surgery, your eyes will be be lubricated and bandaged and antibiotics will be prescribed to help prevent infection. Your surgeon may also prescribe a mild painkiller if you experience any discomfort.
It is recommended to wear sunglasses for several weeks after the operation.
Though normal activities can resume around 10 days post surgery, strenuous activities must be avoided for about three weeks.
Am I eligible for eyelid surgery?
Our plastic surgeon will consult with you prior to making any final decisions regarding your eyelid surgical procedure.
The ideal candidate for cosmetic eyelid surgery is emotionally and physically healthy, well-informed and with realistic expectations. Typically people over the age of 35 choose to have blepharoplasty. However, eyelid surgery may be considered by those who are younger if there are inherited factors contributing to the look of the eyelid.
Some people may not be eligible for eyelid surgery due to existing ophthalmic conditions such as glaucoma, dry eyes or detached retina. Other prohibitive medical conditions include, but are not limited to: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Graves' disease, hypothyroidism or high blood pressure. In rare cases, unsuitable orbital anatomy or insufficient supportive structure may also render some people ineligible for cosmetic eyelid surgery.
Potential risks of eyelid surgery
There is always an element of risk in any given surgical procedure and even the most experienced blepharoplasty surgeons will have patients who experience unpredictable complications.
Potential risks include, but are not limited to, eye infections, swelling and tightness at the corners of the eyelids, excessive bleeding, suture cysts, delayed healing, scarring and asymmetrical healing. In very rare cases, there may be ectropion – outward-turning eyelids and other more serious complications. We strongly recommend that you discuss these risks and share any concerns you may have with your surgeon at the initial consultation.
Despite the risks, cosmetic eyelid surgery is relatively safe when compared to more invasive plastic surgical procedures with very positive and long-lasting results.
