As we age, it is not unusual to develop 'bags' under the eyes, which is the result of loose skin and fat in the lower eyelid region that can make us look older than we really are. What is the cause of these under eye bags? Biological aging, exposure to sun damage, fluctuations in weight, such as obesity, and heredity factors. These changes, which occur over time, can be reversed with one very effective and long lasting cosmetic procedure.

The operation
Lower eyelid surgery usually lasts approximately 30 minutes, depending on the specific condition of the skin around the eye area. Prior to the surgery the patient is given a local anaesthetic. The surgeon will make a very fine incision down the lash line, which allows him to remove any excess skin or fat. Sutures are used to close the incision and will be removed 3 to 5 days after the operation.
After the operation
The first night after the operation, it is important that the patient's head remain elevated and cold compresses repeatedly applied to the eyes in order to reduce swelling. If you are sensitive to pain, the surgeon will prescribe a mild painkiller. For the first few days, you may experience a stretched sensation around your eyes and your surgeon may also prescribe a special cream to be used for lubricating your eyes to eliminate any sensation of dryness.
Although the recovery period is short, your eyes may be sensitive for some time following the surgical procedure. Doctors advise patients not to do any strenuous activities following the lower eyelid surgery. After the operation it is typical for the eyelids to be red and swollen, but as the scars start to heal, this will also disappear with time. The results of lower eyelid blepharoplasty are amazing and long-lasting and will absolutely change the way you see yourself when you look in the mirror.
Problems that might occur
Serious complications are rare with this surgery. Minor complications may include:
- excessive tearing
- sensitive eyelids
- dry eyes
- blurred vision
No operation comes without risks, and although these risks are minor, it is important that you follow the instructions of your plastic surgeon; this will minimize the chance of complications arising.
